The Gibson SG was originally designed and released in 1960 as a replacement for the traditional Les Paul guitar as sales of the Les Paul model had been on the decline. Although his name was on the headstock, the guitar was not designed by Les Paul and in fact, Les Paul did not like the design at all and requested that Gibson remove his name from the guitar. Gibson complied in 1963 and renamed the guitar “SG” which stood for “Solid Guitar”.
