In this guitar lesson/ tutorial from Studio 33 Guitar, we teach you how to play “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix on guitar.

Jimi Hendrix was one of the greatest guitar players to ever live and this is a classic rock song that is a “must know” song if you play electric guitar.

Jimi tuned his guitar in Eb tuning, meaning each string is tuned down one half step (Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb). I tuned down for the intro of the video when I played along with the original recording, but I am teaching the lesson in standard tuning to make it easier to follow along.

This song also feature the “Hendrix Chord” which is a chord that Jimi Hendrix used a lot and is often associated to him. The technical term for that chord is a E7#9, but it sounds more complicated than it really is.

Make sure you play this song aggressively and with lots of intensity; this is how Jimi Hendrix would always play. Don’t be afraid to hit the guitar strings hard, give it lots of emotion using bends, slides and vibrato.

The other two chords you need for this song are G major and A major. Hendrix played these chords by wrapping his thumb around the top of the guitar neck, but they can also be played as regular barre chords as I show in this video.
